Out of Curiosity...

C'est décidé aujourd'hui je vais voir Gozo, l'île située à côté de Malte.

Départ 7:30 en direction du Terminal du Ferry, à Cirkewwa. J'arrive vers 8:15 et j'en profite pour aller voir la fameuse "Paradise Bay", qui, je dois le dire, m'a fameusement déçue... Je trouve qu'elle n'a rien de paradisiaque et je lui préfère de loin sa jumelle, Golden Bay, que j'ai vue hier. A droite, on peut voir le Terminal de départ du Ferry.

Today I choose to see Gozo Island, next to Malta.

7:30 am Departure towards the Ferry Terminal at Cirkewwa. I arrive around 8:15 am and I take this opportunity to see the famous "Paradise Bay", which I must say, disappointed me a lot... I think it has nothing of a paradise and I prefer by far its twin, Golden Bay, that I saw yesterday. On the right, you can see the Ferry Terminal.

Embarquement à bord du Ferry et départ à 9:45. A l'arrivée, je fais la touriste... Me voici dans un bus panoramique dont le tarif était excessivement peu cher.

Boarding at 9:45 am. At the arrival, I'm a perfect tourist... Here I am in a panoramic bus whose price was way too cheap!

St. John the Baptist Church, Xewkija

Nous passons devant l'Eglise St. Jean-Baptiste à Xewkija. L'architecte Joseph D'Amato en a dessiné les plans d'après la Basilique Santa Maria della Salute à Venise, Italie.

On aperçoit déjà la citadelle de Rabat (Victoria) au loin.

We are now passing by St. John the Baptist Church, in Xewkija. Architect Joseph D'Amato, much inspired by the famous Basilica of Santa Maria Della Salute in Venice, drew the plans.

One can already see Rabat's citadel far off.

In Rabat (Victoria)

12:10 arrivée dans la 'capitale', Rabat. Je m'arrête pour me promener un peu et profiter de l'ambiance festive; les derniers nuages sont partis.

12:10 am the bus arrives in the 'main city', Rabat. I hop off to walk and enjoy the Christmas atmosphere; the last coulds are gone.

Azure Window, Dwerja

On continue le trajet jusqu'à Dwerja, où se situe la célèbre 'Azure Window'. Il est 13:30 et le temps est magnifique, tout comme le paysage!

Apparemment, l'arc est très fragile et menace de s'écrouler d'ici peu. Un gros morceau est déjà tombé en 2012.

The trip goes on to Dwerja, where stands the famous 'Azure Window'. It's 01:30 pm and the weather is amazing, just like the scenery!

Apparently, the arch is very weak and might fall off within a while. A big piece of it already fell down in 2012.

Ta'Pinu Church

Un petit détour sur le trajet, pour passer devant l'Eglise de Ta'Pinu, un très beau monument.

Passing by Ta'Pinu's Church, a very beautiful monument.

Citadel, Rabat (Victoria)

Encore un arrêt à Rabat pour visiter la citadelle.... d'où on a une vue splendide sur toute l'île!

Another stop in Rabat to visit the Citadel... from where you have a magnificent view over the whole island! 

Calypso Cave, Ramla

.... et en route pour 'La Grotte de Calypso' et la Baie de Ramla, la plage rouge. Vous l'aurez compris, c'est la couleur de son sable qui la différencie des autres plage de Gozo.

La Grotte de Calypso elle-même n'est pas accessible car le plafond est très fragile. Par sécurité les visiteurs ne peuvent donc pas y pénétrer. En revanche il y a un promontoire au dessus de la Grotte d'où on peut voir toute la baie.

Selon la tradition, Homère fait référence à cette grotte dans l'Odyssée. La Nymphe Calypso y habitait et y a retenu Ulysse pendant 7 ans avant qu'il ne finisse son voyage.

.... and off to 'Calypso Cave' and Ramla Bay, the red sandy beach. You got it right, it's the reddish colour of its sand that makes it different from all other beaches in Gozo.

Calypso Cave itself cannot be accessed as the roof is very weak. For security reason, visitors cannot enter the cave. However, there is a view point right above it, from where you can easily admire the whole bay.

According to tradition, this is the cave referred to by Homer in The Odyssey. The nymph Calypso lived in this cave and it is where she entertained Ulysses for seven years before he resumed his journey.

Gozo Harbour, Mgarr
